Building a team of marketers and developing their skills as your business grows can be one of the toughest challenges to address. While you want to make sure that you have a variety of perspectives on your team and certain a great deal of empathy for your customers, inevitably a lot of people “end up” in marketing without a lot of formal training. How can you get everybody on the same page (or, maybe even weed out people who are never going to get there)?

Try creating your own marketing courses using the open source course management suite named Moodle. This system provides everything you need to create and manage courses for up to 50,000 students. You can create and post lessons, of course. What’s more interesting is the ability to set up timed quizzes or tests for participants. You can have your IT department download and manage Moodle on your own servers or you can try a hosting service that will charge you based on the number of students in your school. Either way, the cost of hosting your courses will likely be much less than the cost of creating your courses.

It may not be popular, but testing is hard to escape. Google and Microsoft are well known for testing their potential employees. What makes the most sense for marketers is to use Moodle to create and re-enforce standard marketing processes. If your major assets are your people, this might be your smartest growth investment.
