Trunk space

Trunk space A winter weekly to keep you warm

Posted by maggie.hunsucker December 5, 2008 at 1:51 pmweekly

Remember the innocent elephant jokes of our youth? You know the ones – What do elephants do for laughs? (Tell bad people jokes) or What do you call an elephant with a machine gun? (Sir).

A natural lead-in into this week’s caption contest, where we encourage child-like humor and abandon, but usually reward the opposite. Our new cartoon – Trunk Space – can be found at the top of this entry (email subscribers can click on “Read Full Post”). The winning caption receives a $30 iTunes gift certificate and their name in big beautiful orange font, like this week’s winner, JR Gunderson, whose caption appears below:

While JR may need an overview of the subjunctive, his caption was the most captivating.

This may be your last chance to win a weekly caption contest in 2008, so submit your entries now (yes, you can submit more than one).

P.S. Don’t forget to submit an entry to Check My Bait. Now that the holiday season is upon us, we expect to be assaulted with some of the best worst advertising out there. While there’s no iTunes prize for Check My Bait, we believe mocking bad ads is a gift in and of itself.

Posted by tom klein September 11, 2008 at 11:18 amweekly

Yes, friends, it is the (sort of) weekly feed growth! But first, congratulations are in order. Mark is last week’s caption winner. His humorous tweak of the Georgia public school system earned him a $30 iTunes gift certificate.

This just proves – if you don’t have anything nice to say, you should be participating in the feed growth! caption contest.

And here is your next chance. We just unveiled this week’s cartoon- Come on in, the water’s just fine. The rules and rewards are the same (winner receives a $30 iTunes gift certificate, his/her name in print, and oh yes, the glory).  Remember- no limit on the number of entries and no accounting for taste, so keep ‘em coming!

Congratulations to Tyler Bagley. He just won a $30 iTunes gift certificate by playing our weekly caption contest. $30 dollars for 7 words? – good luck getting Conde Nast to pay that much.

As Tyler basks in the glory of his win, we invite you to try your hand at this week’s John Nelson cartoon, found here.

We will award another $30 iTunes gift certificate to the best submission. That’s right, we upped the ante from $25 (well actually, we learned iTunes doesn’t offer $5 increments). No limit on the number of entries- so, keep ‘em coming.

Don’t forget to utilize our commenting plugin. If you are unsure how, we’ve got you covered with this little screencast we created to demonstrate the process.

Do you think you can do better than Frances? We’ve raised the bar and will award the next winner a $25 iTunes gift certificate. Try your hand at this week’s John Nelson cartoon, found at the top of this post.

If you are unsure how to work our commenting plug-in, check out this sweet little screencast we created to demonstrate the process.

A week of ideas caption contest

A week of ideas feed growth! weekly – hot tub (in a James Brown voice)

Posted by tom klein June 23, 2008 at 7:23 pmweekly

It’s here! You’ve always wanted to enter that oh so famous cartoon caption contest in the back of the New Yorker (or, um, maybe Field & Stream). This is your big chance. We’ll be featuring a new cartoon from John Nelson every week.

Of course, our cartoons will highlight some creative fishing techniques, a little inspiration for anyone who’s working hard to create a customer feeding frenzy.

So, what do you win? Beyond effusive praise and the adulation of your peers, you mean? Let’s just say that it’s a surprise.

Okay, here’s how to play. First, choose the post by clicking on the post title – a week of ideas. Then, click on the orange “add image comment” tab found above the cartoon. Mouse-over the cartoon, lineup the cross hair (note that the caption will be BELOW the box that you draw), and draw a box of any size where you want to add a comment. The system will take a snapshot and pop-up a comment box where you can type your witty caption. The image capture and your caption will be posted below. Click on “show image” next to your comment to see your caption inserted into the cartoon.

You can’t win if you don’t play. No limit on the number of entries.

We will review all submissions and feature the winner next week.
